Shelby American’s 2012 GT 350 is a vintage-inspired throwback to the days when the Ford Mustang was in its infancy and a race driver from Texas converted a batch into no-holds-barred race cars. No question about it, the car’s a stormer – what with its optional supercharged V-8 and track-tuned suspension. Now, for the new model year, Shelby’s made a lone change to the specifications, adding a wind-in-your-hair variant – a GT 350 Convertible.
Yes, purists, you can still get a GT 350 in the traditional coupe configuration, but new for 2012, a drop-top variant is also available. All the same options apply: six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission; naturally-aspirated for 430 horsepower, or supercharged for either 525 or 624 horsepower; white with blue stripes, red with white stripes, or blue with white stripes.
All the other standard GT 350 tricks are present, A-pillar-mounted auxiliary gauges, specially embroidered interior trim, a blacked-out rear fascia panel, and special Cragar wheels made specifically for Shelby American. Shelby also beefs up the suspension, tweaking sway bars, springs, and dampers to achieve a handling balance that is right at home on your local road course.
Just 350 GT 350s will be built for 2012 at a cost starting at $26,995 (plus a donor Ford Mustang GT coupe or convertible) for the naturally-aspirated car, or $33,995 for a supercharged version. Orders are currently being taken.
