Chevrolet Builds First New Trailblazer in Thailand; No, You Can't Have One

Chevrolet revealed its all-new Trailblazer for outside of North America earlier this year, and now the first production example has rolled off the assembly line in Rayong, Thailand.

The first 2013 Trailblazer off the line was a top-of-the-line LTZ model equipped with the 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel I-4 that's rated at 177 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque. Chevy also offers the Trailblazer in LT trim, a smaller 2.5-liter turbo-diesel engine good for 148 hp and 258 lb-ft, optional four-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive is standard), and either a five- or six-speed manual transmission. As we’ve previously reported, the new Trailblazer shares its body-on-frame architecture and a fair amount of sheetmetal with the all-new Colorado midsize pickup that’s already on sale in Thailand.

Martin Apfel, the president of General Motors Thailand/Southeast Asia said when the first SUV rolled off the line, "The Trailblazer will be built in Thailand for Thailand, and soon also make its way into the rest of the world." Chevrolet engineered the seven-seat Trailblazer to perform well on road and also be able to tackle some of the worst terrain Southeast Asia has to offer.

GM's plant in Rayong has also seen a third shift added with the start of Trailblazer production to help meet demand for the new SUV and increased demand for the Colorado pickup. However, despite the extra production, we won't be seeing the Trailblazer on our shores any time soon. That said, we will get a version of the Colorado pickup truck here; GM announced last year that the new Colorado will be built at its plant in Wentzville, Missouri.

What say you – should Chevy reconsider and add a truck-based midsize SUV to its US lineup, or is its North American portfolio fine without the Trailblazer?

A Duramax Trailblazer could compete against the turbo gasoline crossovers, and having SBC-based V6 and V8 options would challenge the establishment. Of course, market them "manly" and people will prefer the Duramax 4 or 6 cylinder Trailblazer over the crossovers since diesel will sell if the fuel economy is better.
I'm considering buying one and importing it here and see what happens, the trailblazer is an icon here.
Yes, Chevrolet should offer an affordable alternative to Suburbans and 4-Runners....for familys that occasionally tow a boat and always need 7 seats and diesel economy. It would sell in the US!

Please bring the turbo diesel Trailblazer to the USA!!! GM finally has a product to compete with the Toyota 4Runner and they don't bring it to the USA. Please give me a reason not to buy a Toyota.
