Spied: Honda Civic Type R Testing with Ford Focus RS

Although the Euro-market Honda Civic Type R ended production in 2010, the automaker appears to be working on a replacement, if this prototype spotted testing on the street and at the Nürburgring is any indication. While the last model was a two-door hatchback, the new model appears to be based on the Euro-market four-door hatch already on sale.

Just before the 2012 Paris auto show, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito confirmed that an all-new Honda Civic Type R is under development for European customers. Honda has some lofty goals for the Civic Type R as the automaker aims to dethrone the Renault Megane 265 Trophy as the fastest front-drive car around the Nürburgring. Not surprisingly, the prototype was spotted with a Megane RS Trophy, Ford Focus RS, and Opel Astra OPC.

While the last European Honda Civic Type R was powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter I-4, the new model is rumored to get a turbocharged engine with as much as 300 hp in order to reach its performance goals. A closer look at the prototype reveals a new front spoiler with larger air intakes, red Brembo brake calipers, wider fender flares, quad exhaust pipes, and large rear wing.

The Honda Civic Type R is expected to arrive in showrooms sometime in 2015, so look for more details and its auto show debut before then.
