Caught! Faster Fiesta ST Spied Testing on Nurburgring

Our friends over at Motor Trend scored some shots of what looks to be a hotter version of the Ford Fiesta subcompact running laps on Germany’s Nürburgring. Could this be the Fiesta ST we’ve long been waiting for?

Wearing almost no camouflage, the tarted-up Fiesta has adopted the same gaping grille treatment as its big brother, the upcoming Focus ST . Other giveaways that this Fiesta packs a bigger punch include a rear diffuser, larger five-spoke wheels, and rear disc brakes.

We had already heard that the Fiesta ST would debut within the next two years, most likely packing a 180-hp, 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine, which would likely be mated with a six-speed manual transmission. Such an engine already exists and will make its first U.S. appearance in the 2012 C-Max, although mated to a six-speed automatic in Ford’s mini-minivan.

While we have yet to receive definite confirmation on a hot-hatch Fiesta for our shores, Ford officials have previously said that the North American market will see more performance-oriented Fords, including a specialized Fiesta. And, seeing as the One Ford mentality means our Focus ST is identical to the one offered in Europe, there’s a good chance that the little monster you see here will wind up in U.S. showrooms sometime soon. For now, make sure to head over to Motor Trend to check out the full set of spy photos.
