Caterham Launching Go-Karting Championship, New Kart

Plenty of people have described Caterham’s minimalist sports cars as having “go kart-like handling,” and now the cliché is becoming even more true. Caterham Motorsport will oversee a new one-make go-karting championship starting in 2013.

Caterham plans to launch its own go-kart for racing in the series, but has yet to release any details or photos of the racer. The company hopes the series, which is aimed at young drivers, will provide a starting point for those who want to pursue a career in more competitive forms of motorsport. Caterham even says that drivers who start in its new karting series could eventually find themselves driving in Team Lotus -- no longer related to Group Lotus -- Formula 1 cars.

“Our aim is to target the mass-market of parents and youngsters who would like to race in a competitive and yet affordable karting series which, until now, might have been an unachievable dream,” Caterham Motorsports Manager Simon Lambert said in a statement. “Caterham karting will appeal to those looking to make a career in motorsport.”

Caterham has sponsored a one-make race series, involving the company’s Seven, since 1986, and soon plans to launch a championship for the SP/300.R track toy.
