Bugatti has claimed another record, this time for the fastest production convertible. In testing at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien proving grounds in Germany, aVeyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse hit 408.84 km/h, or 254.04 mph.
The record-setting run was driven by Chinese racer Anthony Liu, and supervised by German automotive authority TÜV.The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine with 1200 hp and 1106 lb-ft of torque. Bugatti had previously said the Veyron Grand Sport could "only" manage 233 mph with the roof removed, but the company wanted to break the 400 km/h barrier. Test driver Liu said the car's wind deflector meant he "did not get compromised by the wind at all" during the high-speed run.
In 2010, a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport coupe hit 431.072 km/h at Ehra-Lessien, about 268 mph, but that run was recently removed from the Guinness World Records because the test car's speed limiter had been removed.
Bugatti will sell eight examples of the Grand Sport Vitesse called the World Record Car Edition. Like the record-setting car, they will be painted black and orange. The price: €1.99 million before taxes (about $2.6 million). The Bugatti Veyron World Record Car Edition will make its public debut later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show.
