BMW Z4 to Receive Four-Cylinder Engine in 2012

#BMW, #Z4

Say goodbye to the three-liter inline 6 you have come to love in the BMW Z4. Our insider intel tells us that the base engine in BMW’s hardtop roadster is off to greener pastures. In its place will be an all-new 4-cylinder engine. Yes, a 4-cylinder BMW on US shores. Details are sketchy so far, but our sources tell us that we should be looking at a minimum of 200 hp from the new four banger, hitting our shores later this year.

The current base engine in the BMW Z4 is a naturally aspirated version of BMW’s familiar 3-liter six found in the 330i, last generation X3 SUVs, and last generation 530i sedans. In the current Z4 it pumps out 255 horsepower and 220 lb-ft, while returning an estimated combined 23 mpg. We expect to see even better fuel economy from the reduced cylinder count of the new engine.

The four-cylinder Z4 will lead BMW’s charge in bringing back smaller engines to the US market. The last BMW fitted with a four-cylinder on western shores was the mid-90’s 318ti. We don’t know which models will get the smaller engine in America quite yet yet, but there have been rumors floating around about a turbocharged 4-cylinder joining the next generation 3-Series lineup. Our source shied away from commenting directly, but told us to look for the all-new engine in newer models. With a new 3-Series coming soon and the petite X1 SUV coming to the US and Canada within the next year, we will definitely be keeping our eyes on BMW’s spec sheets.

AGREE!!!! BMW IS WAY TO EXPENSIVE HERE IN AMERICA, IF BMW CAN GET BETTER MPG AND KEEP GREAT POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO THEN IM OK WITH A 4CLY TURBO! BUT AND ITS A BIG BUT THE PRICES NEED TO DROP DRASTICALY 10K TO 15K! ( STARTING WITH THE MINI WAY OVERPRICED)

Hmmm, I'm not sure this is gonna work out unless they get the horsepower way up or the price way down. I don't think too many BMW buyers are going to shell out $46k+ for a four-cylinder making 200hp.

"The last BMW fitted with a four-cylinder on western shores was the mid-90’s 318ti." Seriously, Automobile? Have you forgotten the 1.9l Z3? I would expect this kind of error from CNN, but not you guys.
