BMW to Debut Five World-Premiere Models at Frankfurt

BMW will make its presence known at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, planning a total of five world premieres. With so many new models dropping at the same time, we’re eagerly anticipating next week’s big event. Though we’ve already covered many of the models BMW plans to debut, here’s a brief rundown of what you’ll see from the Bavarian automaker next week:

BMW i3 and i8 Concepts

These two models are expected to be the big ones of the show, as the proposed offerings to launch BMW’s green-conscious “i” sub-brand. As we’ve reported extensively in the past, the i3 Concept previews a future all-electric city car from BMW, and will feature carbon-fiber construction and an aluminum frame. The German automaker says that the i3 will be the first purely electrically powered production vehicle the BMW Group has put out.

The i8 Concept will be a further development of the Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept first shown a couple years ago, and will feature a hybrid drivetrain developed for both fun and frugality. For more on what you can expect from the i8, check out our previous coverage of the car.

Second-Generation BMW 1 Series

While the American market is getting a slightly updated version of the first-gen 1 Series in 2012, Europe will get an all-new generation of BMW’s current smallest offering. With new styling and updated drivetrains, the 1 Series is expected to retain its fun-to-drive yet practical philosophy of design. True to BMW’s performance commitment, the second-generation 1 Series will remain rear-drive, and also feature a range of new turbocharged engines. The new 1 Series will likely come here eventually, but Americans will probably miss out on the five-door hatchback version of the car that Europe has enjoyed for years.

2012 BMW M5

Another hotly-anticipated model from the Bavarian automaker, the next BMW M5 will finally be seen by the public at large next week. With a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 pumping out 552 hp and 501 lb-ft of torque, the new M5 gets a substantial power boost over the last model. Though we’ve covered every scrap of info that’s come out of Germany regarding this souped-up sports sedan, BMW might just tell us something we don’t already know when the M5 hits the stage next week.

BMW 520d EfficientDynamics

Likely a Europe-only model, the 520d EfficientDynamics will expand upon the fuel-saving tech already in use on the four-cylinder turbodiesel version of the 5 Series. Producing 184 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, the 520d’s 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 was designed with sportiness and efficiency in mind. It’s unlikely that we’ll get a 520d in any flavor, but we’re still eager to see more of the oil-burning luxury sedan.
