Today’s cars pack more technology on board than the spacecraft that helped bring mankind to the Earth’s moon, and an increasing amount of that tech is specifically tied to improving safety. Today, BMW unveiled its Integrated Safety Technology Concept vehicle, showcasing some of the newest (and perhaps most effective) active, passive, pre- and post-crash safety technologies the automaker has to offer.
BMW’s Integrated Safety Concept vehicle contains the most effective safety technologies for drivers and other road users to date. BMW had determined that while there is a plethora of different kind of safety technologies, the automotive industry has hit a point of diminishing returns, and not all are the most effective for all cars. The hallmarks of the ISC are enhanced automatic collision notification, and a camera-based pre-collision system that can warn the driver or automatically brake the car to avoid hitting a pedestrian or another vehicle.
The technologies chosen for the ISC were based on their real-world effectiveness, and not simply for their passive effects. They will be showcased and demonstrated starting today, at the 2011 Enhanced Safety of Vehicles Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.
BMW is not the first automaker to create a showpiece of this sort. Safety demonstrators have been built for decades, but recent examples include the Mercedes-Benz ESF 2009, which was based off of the S400 Hybrid sedan.
