2013 BMW Gran Coupe 640i Pricing Starts at $76,895

BMW announced pricing of the 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe today. The all-new four-door coupe will start at $76,895 (including destination and handling). It is scheduled to go on sale early this summer.

The 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe will be the first Gran Coupe model to go on sale. It will be joined by the 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe later this summer. The 640i is powered by a 315-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine producing 330 lb-ft of torque; a 445-horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine cranking out 480 lb-ft powers the 650i models. Both engines will be backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims the rear-drive 650i will hit 62 mph (100 km) in 4.6 seconds and the all-whee-drive 650i xDrive will get to 62 mph a tenth of a second sooner.

Although late to the party, BMW will finally join the four-door coupe craze (originated by the Mercedes-Benz CLS-class which launched in 2004 and was redesigned for the 2010 model year) with the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Sport. The Bavarian automaker is calling it a four-door, “4+1” passenger coupe.

The 2013 BMW Gran Coupe will make its world debut at the Geneva International Auto Show in March. BMW plans to preview the North American version in early March at the Concours d’Elegance in Amelia Island, Florida ahead of its official North American premiere at the New York International Auto Show in April.

The automaker will announce pricing of the V-8 models closer to their late summer launch.

$77,000 used to be an amount that only the most desirable cars could command. What makes this car desirable? A mid-line BMW with below-average looks? That probably handles worse than average? Are people that afraid of buying and maintaining a proper used BMW? They are out there, and they don't cost much. This will be just another used car in about three years. BMW is getting more cynical these days. If a hedge fund bought BMW and tried to prostitute the brand for maximum revenue, it would build cars like this.
It does look good from the front, but the side looks odd, as if there's a dent in the driver's door. From the rear it looks like a 5 series. The interior is awful, garish and over done. Doesn't BMW have someone who can tailor a proper interior? That steering wheel looks cheap as if it was lifted from a 3 series. BMW should take this back to the designers for a remake, but no doubt there are fools lining up to buy it. Sorry, I did want to like it.
