BMW M3, M235i Testers Caught Near L.A.

Motor Trend senior production editor Kirill Ougarov recently had an eventful commute when he spotted and snapped two BMW test mules in Southern California. The camouflaged car pictured above is an F30 M3 sedan, which is easily distinguishable thanks to its signature quad exhaust tips and hood bulge. As previously reported, the new M3 will likely ditch its V-8 engine in favor of a force-induction I-6.

The other prototype (pictured below) is most likely an M235i and it was accompanied by a driver extremely skilled in doling out dirty looks. The styling matches previous examples we’ve spotted, as do the dual split-side exhausts that don’t appear on lower models. A turbocharged I-6 will be under the hood of this one as well, with power likely being around 320 hp – the same output found in the European-market BMW 135i. The 135i can be had with a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto and rear- or all-wheel drive.

Leaked production documents show that production of the M235i begins in November, so expect an appearance at the Frankfurt auto show in September, though BMW could hold off until the Los Angeles auto show in November. The M3, on the other hand, is almost certain to make its debut on the Bavarians’ home turf.
