BMW Reveals 328 Hommage Concept, Pays Tribute To Legendary 328 Racer

BMW has just revealed the new 328 Hommage concept, designed as a tribute to the original 328 roadster, which celebrates its 75th birthday this year. The concept will make an appearance at this weekend’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este located near the Mille Miglia, which is historically tied to the legendary 328 racecar.

Engineers involved with that car—which still holds the highest average speed record for the Mille Miglia circuit—achieved a feathery 780 kilograms (1,720 pounds) curb weight by using magnesium alloy and aluminum material throughout the frame and body. Seventy-five years later, BMW has employed a modern twist on the original 328’s lightweight construction by using carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) throughout the exterior and interior of the 328 Hommage concept. BMW showcases the high-tech composite by leaving its diagonal pattern visible. Exterior design cues pulled from the original 328 include the twin kidney grill, leather hood straps and two-piece rims. BMW states that the three-dimensional, multi-layered round headlights contain black insets that mimic the tape cross used back in the day.

The driver-focused and spartan interior is another display of lightweight composite material accented with butterscotch-colored leather seats and brushed aluminum trim. Passengers are secured in the door-less cockpit by four-point seatbelts.

BMW’s press release goes into great length about the concept’s CFRP construction and retro design, but conspicuously missing are details on how the concept performs. BMW does state that an inline six-cylinder engine is stuffed under the hood and that’s about it.

The open-air concept is BMW’s latest Hommage creation. Back in 2008, the automaker created the M1 Hommage as a tribute to the M1 supercar that debuted more than 30 years ago, and also unwrapped that showcar at the Villa d'Este show. Like that car, expect the 328 Hommage concept to simply remain a show car.
