The BMW 1 Series hatchback is has just gotten an overhaul across the Atlantic, so BMW has sent a slew of new photos of the five-door driving around Germany.
The EU-spec model gets a rash of four-cylinder engines: a 1.6 liter gas engine rated at 136hp in the 116i and 170hp in the 118i, a 1.6 liter diesel rated at 116hp in the 116d EfficientDynamics, and a two liter diesel rated at 116hp in the 116i, 143hp in the 118i, and 184hp in the 120d.
The hatchback, which we unfortunately don’t get in the states, is marginally larger than before, by about 3.5 inches in length and about three-quarters of an inch in width, and can attain up to 51 mpg in the EU combined cycle thanks to an available eight-speed automatic transmission with stop/start functionality.
Don’t expect much of the EU hatchback to come here, however, especially those diesel engines, but expect our upcoming 1 Series to look and feel similar. Similar, that is, save for the name: Car Magazine reported that the 1 Series coupe and convertibles may soon carry a 2 Series badge, leaving the 1 Series hatchback the only “1.” The same should be true for the 3 Series, which would jettison its coupes and convertibles into the 4 Series nameplate. The nameplate switch for the 1 Series should occur when the model is replaced some time in 2013, at the same time the 3 Series is replaced and renamed. No word on if the eponymous M3 will follow suit.
