BMW to Bring Frozen Black Edition M3 to U.S., Supplies Limited to Just 20 Units

BMW has announced a special run of 20 Frozen Black Edition M3s for the U.S., following the success of its Matte Edition introduced in China. When released earlier this year for the Chinese market, it was reported that the Frozen Black paint job’s application process was so complicated, that only 10 cars could be produced per day. Such low numbers means that the Frozen Black Edition will be pretty exclusive as BMWs come. Seeing as the 30 Frozen Grey Coupes offered in 2010 sold out in just 15 minutes, demand for this special edition could prove considerable.
Following the naming scheme of the Frozen Grey Coupe introduced last year, “Frozen Black” was chosen to represent this special model rather than “Matte Edition.” The paint process is the same as on the one offered in China, with a matte clear coat applied over a black metallic paint. The Frozen Black Edition M3 carries a price tag of $79,650, with availability being extremely limited – as was the case with the Frozen Grey Coupe and Chinese Matte Edition.
In addition to the special paint, the Frozen Black Edition M3 stands out from other run-of-the-mill M3s with the help of black 19-inch wheels off the M3 GTS, red-painted brake calipers and gloss black-painted kidney grilles, side gills and exhaust tips. Since it’s still an M3, performance is also highlighted, with a competition package and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard equipment. All 20 cars produced for the U.S. will be identically-equipped.
While matte-black cars will always be cool in our book, the likelihood of this special paint being difficult to maintain is fairly high. As smudges, water spots and other blemishes are easier to spot on a flat finish – not to mention potentially damaging to the paint if left untreated, in some cases – having to constantly wash this car every time you want to drive it could get really old, really fast. Then again, if you’re a BMW enthusiast with the kind of money to buy a Frozen Black Edition M3, perhaps you have another one that you plan on actually driving.
