BMW has released details on its line of M Performance parts designed for its 2011-2012 5 Series and 2012 BMW 3 Series models. Developed in concert with BMW’s M division, the parts are intended to provide a touch of the brand’s racing technology to the consumer. Differing from the parts equipped with the M Sport package, the components in the M Performance catalog include aerodynamic, powertrain, and chassis upgrades, as well as cosmetic modifications inside and out.

The F30-chassis, 2012 BMW 3 Series gets a new 20-inch forged alloy wheel option that BMW says is 2.4 pounds lighter than a similarly sized wheel. A 20-inch M Performance wheel is also offered on the 5 Series, and the sets for both cars each feature a two-tone color scheme with Ferric Grey-accented inner spokes. The wheels come wrapped in sticky Pirelli P-Zero Run-Flat rubber, with 225/35R20-size tires mounted in the front, and 255/30R20s in the rear. BMW says this wheel and tire combination is the largest application the manufacturer approves.

A Brembo big-brake kit is offered for both 3 and 5 Series models and is comprised of four-piston fixed aluminum calipers in the front and two-piston units in the rear. The upgraded calipers bite down on cross-drilled and grooved brake rotors, which measure 14.6 inches in diameter for the fronts, and 13.6 inches for the rear. The calipers can be painted in one of three different colors, including M Performance Red, Yellow, or Orange.

Both 335i and 535i models can choose the stainless steel exhaust system, which was specially developed to enhance the volume and sound quality of BMW’s turbocharged I-6 engine. BMW says the system reduces backpressure and produces a sportier tone without the typical droning you might get with an aftermarket exhaust, while also adding to the car’s looks with dual chrome-plated three-inch exhaust tips, which come laser-engraved with the BMW M logo. The performance exhaust option will be available starting June 2012.

For looks, BMW is offering high-gloss black kidney grilles, carbon fiber mirror caps, and a sport stripe package available in black or white to its M performance catalog. In addition, the 5 Series has the option of a carbon fiber trunk spoiler, which BMW says improves vehicle stability and driving dynamics. The 3 Series has a racing-inspired steering wheel available, which features a thick, flat-bottom design and is covered in hand-stitched Alcantara. Both 3 and 5 Series models have the option of carbon fiber and Alcantara interior trim, as well as a carbon fiber shift knob or gear selector lever, depending on transmission type.

The parts are covered under BMW‘s 4-year/50,000-mile warranty if installed prior to the vehicle’s delivery. If installed after the initial purchase of the vehicle, the parts are covered for the remainder of the original limited warranty or for two years after installation, whichever amount of time is greater. No pricing has been announced for the parts, but BMW tells us that info should be available soon.
