How can you top the new 2012 911 Carrera Black Edition? If you’re Porsche, it seems the answer lies with a special edition Boxster to match: the new 2012 Boxster S Black Edition.
As is the case with the matching 911, the Boxster S Black Edition is available only with black paint and a black interior, albeit owners won’t have the freedom to opt for a metallic black exterior hue. Predictably, exterior trim pieces that normally contrasted with the paint color (e.g. nameplate, exhaust tips, side air intakes, etc.) have been painted in a matching shade of noir. The only break from the monochromatic paint scheme are the wheels: the 19-inch units, borrowed from the Boxster Spyder, receive a polished aluminum finish and black accents.
Inside, buyers can predictably select any interior color they desire -- so long as it’s black. Black leather adorns the seats (which also receive embossed headrests) and door panels, and a number of trim panels -- including the gauge faces themselves -- are colored to match. The only deviation lies with the steering wheel spokes, doorsill plates, and door pull handles -- all of which are crafted from aluminum.
Unlike the 911 Black Edition, however, this Boxster isn’t all show and now go. Displacement of the 3.4-liter flat-six-cylinder engine remains unchanged, but Porsche upped power by 10 horsepower, bringing the total to 320 horses. Buyers will be able to either retain the standard six-speed manual gearbox, or opt for Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch unit.
In addition, Porsche is also throwing in additional standard content into the Black Edition model. Porsche’s Communication Management system, navigation, Bose surround sound, and satellite radio are standard, as is the convenience package, which includes bi-xenon HID headlamps and rain-sensing wipers.
The cost for all this extra content and power? $66,150, which is actually $3200 less than ordering a comparably-equipped Boxster S model. Expect this deal to end quickly, however -- Porsche’s only building 987 examples for worldwide consumption.
