Big Bad Benz Wagon: Mercedes-Benz Unveils CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake

We already got a look at the all-new 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake two weeks ago, but now enthusiasts really have something to salivate over: the 2013 CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, complete with rear-wheel drive, wagon-like space, and up to 557 hp.

What sets this CLS Shooting Brake apart from lesser variants is the bi-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 found under the hood. It's the same engine that's found elsewhere in the Mercedes-Benz AMG lineup, and is rated here at 525 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Buyers who manage to snag one of the launch-only "Edition 1" CLS63 AMG Shooting Brakes will be treated to an additional 32 hp and 74 lb-ft, bringing the total output of the 5.5-liter to 557 hp and a massive 590 lb-ft. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Compared to the all-wheel-drive Audi S7 – the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake's closest rival – the Merc's V-8 is up 105 hp and 110 lb-ft in its base tune over the Audi's 4.0-liter twin-turbo unit.

Visual upgrades mirror those as on the CLS63 AMG sedan: the interior is trimmed in quilted designo leather, the front fascia has been modified with oversized intakes with LED running lights, and there are square quad-tailpipes out back. Compared to the non-AMG Shooting Brake, the CLS63 has a 56-mm-wider track and uses AMG-specific front and rear suspension. 19-inch triple-spoke light-alloy wheels are standard, and are shod in 255/35 rubber up front and 285/30 in back.

Don't expect to see the Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake on our shores any time soon – much like the less extreme CLS Shooting Brake range itself, this latest AMG wagon is presently a European exclusive, and will go on sale there come October.
