Beijing 2010: Geely Highlights New GE and TX4 Taxi

Geely reached peak criticism after releasing pictures of its GE luxury flagship last year. It was a weak Rolls Royce Phantom knock-off trying to look as serious as possible, like a child donning dad's suit and tie. Since then, Geely has reshaped the GE, and the car above is the result.

This new GE, which, from the front looks like the result of someone attempting to combine a Porsche Cayenne with a Maybach without ever having seen the two, is Geely's full-size V-8-powered, all-wheel drive hybrid flagship.

Hybrid? Yup. Per Geely's specs, the GE uses a 2.4-liter V-8, six-speed automatic, and a plug-in hybrid system named "L4+Electric Motor/Battery." Geely pins output at 272 horsepower and 542 pound-feet of torque. It's also a massive car, per the specs. At 214 inches long and 62 inches high, it eclipses both the BMW 760Li and Rolls Royce Ghost.

Features include single or double rear seats, massaging seats, electronic stability control, separated front and rear compartments, infotainment system capable of video conferencing, and "Chinese Classical Aesthetics." That Emgrand badge represents Geely's upscale sub-brand.

For as radical as the GE is, Geely's TX4 Taxi is a return to aping traditional British aesthetics. Geely is unabashed in this regard, claiming on the spec sheet that the TX4 is a "Classic British Taxi" with a "long History since 1948" and that it "Share the Same Fame with Rolls-Royce and Bentley, among the three traditional British Automobile Brands." Yeah.

Three engine options are available-- two diesels and a gasoline -- available with a mix of five- and six-speed automatics and a six-speed manual. With a claimed 29.5-foot turning circle, the TX4 taxi undercuts the Crown Victoria, the U.S. taxi staple, by 10 feet.
