Add Lightness: 2013 Cadillac ATS to Score Lowest Curb Weight in Class

The 2013 Cadillac ATS' mission was pretty simple: retain most of the CTS' sporting character, but keep the bulk low enough to make the car class competitive against four-cylinder sport sedan competitors. We have no answer on the first part of the mission, but the second part was a success: the Cadillac ATS is set to undercut Japanese and German competition to claim the lowest curb weight amongst its chief competitors.

The final numbers are to be determined, but Cadillac says it predicts a sub-3400 pound curb weight for the base model, which uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making an estimated 200 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Put those numbers against the ATS' competitors and it will likely come out on top. The next closest competitor is the 3400-pound Acura TSX M/T, which is some three inches shorter in wheelbase than the ATS. The BMW 328i M/T, which is slightly longer than the ATS, weighs 3406 pounds.

Cadillac engineers brag that they reached this figure--along with a near-perfect 51/49 front-rear weight distribution--by keeping a close eye on materials choice. The wheels are forged aluminum, which reduce both curb and unsprung weight, and the exterior glass is acoustically laminated, which allowed engineers to use less of it to achieve the same road-noise reduction and UV protection when compared to tempered glass.

Though no shopper will ever be concerned with such a metric, how does the ATS stack up against its classmates from a price per pound perspective (it’s Friday; oblige us).The ATS costs $33,990 for a base model, which works out to about $10.00 per pound.A comparable Acura TSX (base model, automatic transmission) costs $8.76 a pound, while a Volvo S60 T5 FWD costs $9.03 a pound. It does come out ahead of both the Mercedes-Benz C250 and BMW 328i, however: the Merc costs $10.41 a pound, and the Bimmer costs $10.42 per pound.

Roughly translated: it means that the ATS' upgraded materials don’t come cheap.

All the cars you named are FWD cars that allows for the lower weight and that are not as performance based as some of the other cars based on the article. RWD based cars tend to weight a little more, due to to rear suspension components.

Good thing it is the lightest, however in my opinion it could be lighter.. Camry, Altimas, Optimas, Mazda 6 are all roomier cars yet weigh 3100-3300 lb range. Im sure luxury cars should weigh a bit more because of better sound insulation, sturdier steels, more of the thump when you close the doors etc. However luxury cars ,I imagine, use stronger lighter steels.. So in my unexpert opinion, I think the ATS could have been around 3100 base -3400 (top of the line with all bells and whistles)
