Abarth 500 R3T Built For Rallying

The Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse may be the best way to wring a 500 on a road course, but for those who prefer sliding their cars through wide corners, there’s the new Abarth 500 R3T, designed expressly for rallying.

<;P class=MsoNormal>For the most part, the R3T recipe is a clone of the Assetto Corse -- take one Abarth 500, strip interior, add roll cage, and voila! -- but a few changes help set the rally car apart from its tarmac-loving sibling. For starters, the turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 is detuned to “only” 180 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque (in Assetto Corse form, this engine produces 200 hp), but is still mated to the same six-speed sequential gearbox. R3T models also receive a different body kit (this one allows for some ground clearance), a roof-mounted air intake scoop, and giant light pods to help illuminate the course at night.

Although the car is built to FIA Group R3T standards, Fiat will likely relegate the Abarth 500 R3T to promotional events tied to the Assetto Corse series. Pity -- we'd love to see this little guy rip it up in an actual rally championship...
