2015 Subaru Legacy Spied

Subaru is hard at work on the next generation of its Legacy sedan, and our spy photographers spotted the car testing on public roads. We spied this 2015 Subaru Legacy prototype just a few weeks after we saw a 2015 Subaru Outback wagon testing.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy will have an entirely new design, the most notable aspect of which is the new roofline. An angled C-pillar lets the roof flow smoothly downward into the trunklid, producing an almost coupe-like silhouette. The car's front and rear fascias have been redesigned, and it appears to have new projector-style headlights that sweep onto the fenders, as well as new taillights with a prominent clear bar in the middle.

Our spy photographer spotted the 2015 Subaru Legacy testing alongside a 2013 Audi Allroad Quattro and a 2013 Infiniti G37x sedan, suggesting that Subaru has more upscale intentions for its new all-wheel-drive sedan. (The 2015 Subaru Outback we spied testing with an Audi Allroad is more likely to target that car's combination of interior room and practicality.) The new Legacy is expected to start production next year and go on sale as a 2015 model; a debut at a major auto show in early 2014 is highly likely.

Subaru provided some hints as to the design and engineering direction of the 2015 Legacy with the Advanced Tourer concept shown in 2011. The car had a full-length glass roof, LED lighting, swept-back styling, a stylish new interior with bucket-like seating, and an updated version of the Subaru EyeSight active-safety system. The biggest news was under the hood, where the Advanced Tourer packed a hybrid powertrain comprising a 1.6-liter turbocharged boxer-four engine, a lithium-ion battery pack, and an electric motor/generator. Subaru has since hinted that the 2015 Legacy will adopt a hybrid drivetrain based on that concept. It will be the brand's second production hybrid, following the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid that debuted at the New York auto show.

Expect more details on the 2015 Subaru Legacy toward the end of this year or early in 2014.

It is a really interesting time in the development of the automobile. Many different solutions to higher fuel efficiency are being explored. I do hope that the training of auto mechanics - electrical mechanical subsystem repair techs - keeps pace.
