2015 Ram ProMaster City to Join Ram Lineup

We learned two years ago that Ram would be adding a Fiat-based compact van to its lineup sometime soon, and today Chrysler has confirmed that this model will be called the 2015 Ram ProMaster City. Based on the European Fiat Doblo compact van (pictured), the Ram ProMaster City will join the larger Ram ProMaster cargo van and will compete with other compact vans like the Nissan NV200 and the Ford Transit Connect.

It’s likely that the 2015 Ram ProMaster City will offer both cargo and passenger versions, as Ram says in a release that this new offering will go up against “small commercial and passenger vans.” In Europe, the Fiat Doblo is available in numerous configurations ranging from panel vans to seven-seat passenger versions. It’s unclear whether Ram will bring multiple wheelbases or roof heights here, but the larger Ram ProMaster is available in various roof heights and wheelbases in the U.S. Looking at the competition, the 2014 Nissan NV200 offers only a cargo version, but the 2014 Ford Transit Connect will offer both a cargo version and a wagon version, as well as two different wheelbase configurations.

It’s also possible that Ram could offer a broader ProMaster City lineup to eventually replace the existing Ram C/V Tradesman which is based on the Dodge Grand Caravan. We’re hoping that Ram will bring one of the Fiat Doblo’s diesel engines here; the Euro-market Doblo offers a 95-hp, 1.4-liter gasoline four-cylinder in addition to Multijet diesel engines in 1.3-, 1.6-, and 2.0-liter sizes. A torquey diesel engine would give the 2015 Ram ProMaster City an edge over the Nissan NV200 and Ford Transit Connect in fuel economy and, most likely, hauling capacity. However, gasoline engines are equally likely.

Look for more information to come about the 2015 Ram ProMaster City before its arrival in the U.S. in early 2015.
