2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Production Details

Porsche has been talking about its 918 Spyder hybrid supercar for years now, but the unusually long gestation period is finally over, as the production version of the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder officially debuts this week at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

As we’ve previously reported, the Porsche 918 Spyder will be one of the most exclusive Porsche models ever made, with only 918 units produced at a lofty price of $845,000. U.S. deliveries will start next year, with about two thirds of the 918 units already spoken for.

Performance from the 918’s complex, 887 horsepower three-motor hybrid system is ferocious, with Porsche saying that the car will reach 62 mph in 2.8 seconds. The gasoline engine is a 608 hp, 4.6-liter V-8, and it pairs with two electric motors: one 115 kilowatt unit that connects to the rear axle, and another 95 kilowatt unit that puts power down through the front axle, giving the 918 Spyder all-wheel-drive. The Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid as well, with approximately 18 miles of range on electric power alone.

A high-performance Weissach package includes a black, red, and white design inspired by Porsche race cars in addition to lightweight wheels, aerodynamic carbon fiber add-ons, and a 77 lb weight loss compared with the standard car.

A 918 Spyder prototype clocked an impressive Nürburgring lap time of 7:14, considerably faster than the Porsche Carerra GT supercar’s 7:32 time and rivaling supercars like the Lexus LFA and Dodge Viper ACR which have previously held production car records at the Ring. We can’t wait for the arrival of the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder; in his first drive of the car in Germany, our European bureau chief Georg Kacher proclaimed, “This is, without a doubt, one of the best days in my life as a motoring journalist. What a car!”
