The next generation 2014 Mini Cooper debuts in two weeks, and with the redesigned Cooper Hardtop comes the redesign of the Mini Cooper Convertible as well. We’ve already spied undisguised versions of the standard 2014 Mini Cooper hatchback, and now our photographer has spotted a mildly camouflaged prototype of the 2015 Mini Cooper Convertible on a flatbed in Germany.
Unsurprisingly, the new 2015 Mini Cooper Convertible follows the evolutionary styling direction of the redesigned 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop, with the same classic profile and retro design cues. The new Mini appears even more playful than the previous model, with larger, rounder headlights combining with an oval grille up front to create the impression of a smiling face. When raised as it is in these photos, the cloth convertible top maintains the familiar profile of the Cooper hatchback. Out back, the Mini’s taillights have followed in the footsteps of the headlights, and grown ever so slightly.
We’ve also learned about the powertrain lineup for the new Mini Cooper, which is built on a new front-wheel-drive platform that will be shared with the next BMW 1 Series. The base engine will be a turbocharged, 1.5-liter three-cylinder producing 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The upgraded Mini Cooper S will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.  Both engines will use the carryover six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, and both gearboxes will be offered with engine start-stop technology. New active safety technologies are also among the changes for the new Mini, and should include a backup camera, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning.
Look for the 2015 Mini Cooper Convertible to debut sometime in early 2014, following the upcoming debut of the hardtop on November 18.
