2015 Kia Soul EV On Sale Next Year With 120-Mile Range

#Kia, #Soul

Kia confirmed earlier this year that an all-electric version of the Kia Soul hatchback will go on sale next year. The 2015 Kia Soul EV will be the first Kia electric vehicle to be sold outside of its home market in South Korea. We’ve previously spotted prototypes of the 2015 Kia Soul EV testing, but now Kia has revealed much more information about the upcoming EV.

The 2015 Kia Soul EV will be powered by a 109-horsepower electric motor with 210 lb-ft of torque. This power output is competitive with EVs like the Nissan Leaf, but the Kia Soul EV is expected to have a range of 120 miles on a charge compared with the Leaf’s EPA-estimated range of 75 miles. The Kia Soul EV has a 27-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack which can be charged in a few different ways. A full recharge with a 240-volt outlet takes five hours, and a special 100-kilowatt “fast charge” option can replenish the batteries in just 25 minutes.

The Kia Soul EV will look much like the redesigned 2014 Kia Soul, as we’ve seen in spy photos. Exterior changes will amount to special projection headlights, LED accent lights, LED taillights, and special aerodynamic 16-inch wheels. On the inside, the Soul EV will feature a unique instrument cluster, an eight-inch display screen, and various recycled materials throughout the interior. Other modifications include increased sound-proofing and a Virtual Engine Sound System that makes a sound when the car is traveling in reverse or below 12 mph to alert pedestrians.

We’ve previously heard estimates that the 2015 Kia Soul EV will start around $35,000; expect Kia to release more information about the Kia Soul EV closer to its on-sale date sometime in 2014. The 2015 Kia Soul EV will be revealed at one of the major U.S. auto shows this season, possibly at the 2014 New York auto show as that would be exactly one year after the debut of the standard 2014 Kia Soul.

The 120 mile range is not likely to be an EPA number comparable to the Leaf''s 75. Based on the 27 kwh battery expect closer to 85 miles EPA. Wonder what the fast charge is. Combo?
