2015 Ford Mustang Convertible Spied

Our spy photographers have provided us with plenty of photos of the 2015 Ford Mustang coupe, but these shots are our first look at the new Mustang convertible with its fabric roof lowered. The photos highlight the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible's rising beltline and broad rear haunches.

The 2015 Ford Mustang convertible shares almost all of its styling with the coupe -- in fact, our spy shooter says the cars are so similar in silhouette that Ford has been disguising convertible prototypes as coupes with generous amounts of cladding. Based on our spy photos of an undisguised 2015 Ford Mustang coupe, expect the convertible to share the coupe's rounded nose, large polygonal grille opening, and narrow headlights that wrap onto the car's fenders. On both versions, the windshield has a fairly shallow rake and is curved. With its power fabric roof raised, however, the Mustang convertible appears to have a less dramatic roofline that the coupe's arch-like roof.

Inside, we expect the 2015 Ford Mustang will be thoroughly revamped with a new cabin design, the MyFord Touch infotainment system, an updated three-spoke steering wheel, and gadgets like push-button start and automatic climate control.

Regardless of roof type, the 2015 Ford Mustang will drop its live axle in favor of independent rear suspension. The current 3.7-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 engines will carry over to the 2015 car, although we can expect some minor changes to extract a few more horsepower. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is said to be in the cards, too, splitting the difference power-wise between the affordable V-6 and thumping V-8. That turbo engine is also rumored to be shared with a forthcoming Ford Focus RS hot hatch.

The 2015 Ford Mustang coupe is widely expected to take the stage at the 2014 Detroit auto show in January. The convertible version will likely debut several months later, possibly at the New York auto show in April (50 years after the first Mustang launched in 1964) or at the Los Angeles auto show next November.
