The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle is a clear homage to its mid-century roots, but what if you want more classism? If you manage to snatch up one of the 3500 2014 Beetle GSR models, you'll have a unique Bug that harks right back to the 1970s.
The limited-run 2014 Beetle GSR special edition sits atop the Beetle's model hierarchy. Building from the Beetle Turbo R-Line with Sunroof and Sound with Navigation spec, the Beetle GSR harks back to the "Yellow Black Racer" GSR Beetle of the 1970s with a yellow-and-black two-tone exterior paint job, unique 19-inch "Tornado" alloy wheels, black-painted brake calipers, and a larger rear spoiler. Inside, the cabin is done up in the same yellow-jacket-like color scheme with black leather seating surfaces and yellow contrast stitching. Other interior upgrades include a high-grip sports steering wheel, sport seats, a GSR shift lever, and a special-edition badge.
Mechanically, the GSR is identical to the 2014 Beetle R-Line (which was previously the 2013 Beetle Turbo). That means, buyers get a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 good for 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen estimates that the 2014 Beetle GSR will make the dash from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. Like the R-Line, the Beetle GSR is offered with a manual transmission as standard, or with an optional dual-clutch, both with six-speeds.
Unsurprisingly, pricing for the 2014 Beetle GSR tops the Beetle range, with a base price of $30,790, including destination. The six-speed DSG costs an additional $1100. Pricing for non-GSR 2014 Beetles has yet to be released, but a 2013 Beetle R-Line with manual transmission costs $30,930, including destination. Volkswagen that "the majority" of the 3500 Beetle GSRs will come to the U.S. when it goes on sale here in August.
