The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s rigorous small-overlap front crash test has been stumping vehicles left and right, but models from Subaru and Volvo have just passed with flying colors. The 2014 Subaru Impreza, the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek, and the 2014 Volvo XC90 were each rated “Good” on the small-overlap front crash test, meaning that they earn the IIHS’ highest Top Safety Pick + rating.
To earn this rating, vehicles must earn “Good” ratings in four of the five crash tests and at least an “Acceptable” rating in the small-overlap test. Five Subaru models now qualify for this top rating, including the Subaru Forester, the Subaru Legacy, and the Subaru Outback in addition to the Subaru Impreza and the XV Crosstrek. For the 2014 model year, the Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback and the Subaru XV Crosstrek received structural enhancements which have clearly paid off in this test.
The 2014 Volvo XC90’s rating is surprising considering the crossover’s age. Introduced for the 2003 model year, the Volvo XC90 has seen minimal changes over its 11-year run. Still, it becomes the third Volvo model to earn the Top Safety Pick + award after the Volvo S60 and the Volvo XC60. A redesigned 2015 Volvo XC90 will be coming next year, with styling that will purportedly be inspired by the Concept Coupe show car from the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
