2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Shown Undisguised Before Detroit Debut

Mercedes-Benz wasn’t supposed to officially unveil its new AMG-tweaked E-Class until later this week, but this morning, the automaker’s global press site published a photo of the entire 2014 E Class range – including an undisguised 2014 E63 AMG sedan.

Technically, that car – along with the remainder of the 2014 E-Class portfolio, including sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible models – will make its official auto show debut next week in Detroit, but Daimler’s “accidental” photo slip gives us a pretty good look at what to expect. Predictably, the new E63 again looks like an E-Class sedan that’s been pumping iron (and, perhaps, even steroids). Front and rear fenders are both flared, making room for what look to be large AMG-specific aluminum rims. The lower fascia is dominated by a large A-shaped opening that spans the entire width of the car, while the grille is divided by a single bar split subtly in two.

Courtesy of our colleagues at Motor Trend, we have a pretty good idea of what’s under the skin. The twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 remains intact for the new E63 AMG, and output should be in the realm of 570-575 hp or so. The seven-speed wet clutch automatic transmission also returns, but it’s coupled to a revised version of Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, making the 2014 E63 the first AWD AMG that isn’t a SUV. Power is permanently split 33/67 between the front and rear axles, respectably.

We’ll know more once the full array of official details emerge from Stuttgart on Thursday. Until then, stay tuned to Automobile Magazine for the latest on the 2014 E63 AMG, along with other news surrounding the 2013 North American International Auto Show.

Daym M-Benz really nailed the front-end on this. That is gorgeous; if there can be such a thing: understated aggression.
