Let the diesel MPG wars begin! Just after BMW made headlines with a 45 mpg highway rating for the 2014 BMW 328d, Mercedes-Benz has now achieved the same number on the larger 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec, which has just received official EPA ratings of 28/45 mpg city/highway.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec is powered by a 2.1-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Sitting at the bottom of the E-Class range, the E250 BlueTec sedan starts at $52,325 including destination, with 4Matic all-wheel-drive as a $2500 option. Adding all-wheel-drive does lower the mileage ratings, though, with a slight drop to 27/42 mpg city/highway. All E250 BlueTec models have a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec is the clear fuel economy leader of the 2014 E-Class lineup, which also includes 3.5-liter V-6 E350 models, an E400 Hybrid model with a V-6 mated to an electric motor, and the 5.5-liter V-8 E550 models. The entire E-Class lineup is updated for 2014, and the E250 BlueTec is new this year; there was previously an E350 BlueTec diesel sedan, but that model used a larger 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel and only achieved fuel economy ratings of only 22/32 mpg city/highway.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec’s closest competitors are the 2014 BMW 535d and the 2014 Audi A6 TDI. However, both of these cars offer larger, more powerful 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engines and do not match the E250 BlueTec in terms of fuel efficiency. The 535d is rated at 26/38 mpg city/highway, and the A6 TDI—which does have all-wheel-drive as standard—achieves 24/38 mpg city/highway. These two sedans are also more expensive than the E250 BlueTec, with the 2014 BMW 535d starting at $57,525 and the 2014 Audi A6 TDI starting at $58,395, both including destination.
