2014 Land Rover LR4 Gets Supercharged V-6, Eight-Speed Automatic

2014 Land Rover LR4 Euro-Spec front view

The 2014 Land Rover LR4 is still as boxy as it's ever been, but the three-row luxury SUV will be more efficient than its predecessors. That's because the refreshed LR4 -- known in other markets as the Discovery -- is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 instead of a 5.0-liter V-8.

Also used under the hood of other Land Rovers and Jaguars, the new-to-LR4 supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 makes 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, compared to the outgoing naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8′s 375 hp and 375 lb-ft. That SUV had a six-speed automatic; the 2014 LR4 with the V-6 uses an eight-speed automatic. For the 2014 model year, the LR4 joins the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in offering the 340-hp V-6/eight-speed automatic combination. The updated European-spec model is shown below.

EPA-rated fuel economy on the 2013 LR4 was 12/17 mpg city/highway, two numbers that are sure to improve with the new engine/transmission combination, not to mention the EPA-estimated 287 miles to a tank of fuel. An engine stop-start system is now standard and the front grille and headlights have been refreshed. The base-model LR4 will now get a lighter single-speed transfer case four-wheel-drive system, perhaps helping boost fuel economy. The two-speed transfer case four-wheel-drive system is available as part of a Heavy Duty package that also adds an active locking rear differential and a full-size spare tire.

Pricing for the 2014 Land Rover LR4 starts at $50,595 including destination, a $600 increase over last year’s model. Standard equipment includes four-wheel drive, a height-adjustable air suspension, and rearview camera with parking sensors, while the LR4 will now be available with a blindspot monitoring system as well as Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection systems. The 2014 Land Rover LR4 HSE now carries a $55,495 MSRP (up $1275 over the 2013 LR4), while the HSE LUX will go for $60,795 before options, a $1575 increase over the 2013 LR4.
