The recent refresh of the 2014 Kia Sorento is more than skin-deep, as the crossover’s updated platform means that it now gains a five star safety rating from the NHTSA, up from a four star overall rating for the 2011-2013 Kia Sorento.
The 2014 Kia Sorento earned five stars in both the frontal crash test, which crashes the vehicle into a fixed barrier at 35 mph, and the side barrier crash test, which crashes a 3000-plus-pound moving barrier into the stationary vehicle at 38.5 mph. In the rollover test, the 2014 Kia Sedona scored four stars but still received a five star rating overall.
The 2014 Kia Sorento is also rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent agency with a slightly more stringent battery of crash tests. However, because the 2014 Kia Sorento has not yet been tested in the IIHS’ new small overlap crash test, it cannot receive the top designation of Top Safety Pick +.
The 2014 Kia Sorento starts at $24,950 and is offered with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 3.3-liter V-6 engine. A significant update for 2014 meant redesigned front and rear fascias, a new platform, updated engines, and a new top-of-the-line SXL model.
