2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited Front Three Quarters
Chrysler announced today that pricing for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee compact crossover will start at $23,990, including destination. The 2014 Cherokee will be offered in four trim levels – Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk – with the choice of front- or four-wheel drive.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee goes on sale in the third quarter of this year, and will offer two different engines on all but the off-road-ready Trailhawk model. The standard engine is the same 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 heading to the Dodge Dart. In the Cherokee, the four-cylinder is good for 184 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. Buyers opting for the mid-grade Cherokee Latitude and top-spec Cherokee Limited can also opt for an all-new 3.2-liter V-6 engine (a smaller version of the company's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6); the upgraded engine presents a substantial power boost over the base I-4, with 271 hp and 239 lb-ft. Both engines are equipped to a new ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic.
Three different four-wheel-drive systems will be offered on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, as well. Sport, Latitude, and Limited trims all come standard with front-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive is a $2000 option. The different trim levels are available with different systems: Sport models get Active Drive I, which uses the brakes and traction control to deal with wheel slippage; Latitude and Limited models offer Active Drive II, which includes neutral and low-range modes; the Trail-Rated Cherokee Trailhawk uses the Active Drive Lock system with a four-low mode and rear locker. The Trailhawk also offers skid plates, a 56:1 crawl ratio, and an extra inch of ride height to enable up to 20 inches of water-fording capability. All three four-wheel-drive systems are controlled through Jeep's new Selec-Terrain electronic knob on the center console that includes customized settings for snow, sport, sand/mud, rock, and automatic modes.
Base prices for the different 2014 Jeep Cherokee trim levels are as follows (all prices include destination):
- 2014 Jeep Cherokee Sport: $23,990
- 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude: $25,490
- 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: $30,490
- 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited: $28,990
When stacked up against its competition, the 2014 Cherokee sits about mid-pack in both price and power. It's not the cheapest automatic-equipped compact crossover (that's the $21,155 Nissan Rogue), nor is it the most-powerful (that's the 200-hp Volkswagen Tiguan). The Jeep's optional V-6 is the third-most-powerful optional engine in the class, only beat by the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox's 301-hp V-6. Check out the full comparison chart below.
