Volkswagen and Toyota will soon be joined by Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick when it comes to offering complimentary maintenance plans. All eligible 2014-model-year Chevrolets, GMCs, and Buicks will be covered by two years or 24,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
The program covers up to four service visits in a 24-month period, and GM says it is fully transferable to future owners for those who plan to sell their vehicles before they reach 24,000 miles or two years of ownership. And for those who have already driven out of a GM dealership with a shiny, new 2014-model-year vehicle, don’t worry: you get the scheduled maintenance program, too.
“We know that customers who service their vehicles at our dealerships are much more likely to purchase another GM product down the road,” said GM CEO Dan Akerson. “It’s all the more important to bring customers to our service facilities for routine maintenance to further enhance the quality and reliability of their GM vehicles.”
Since maintenance will be free for the first two years or 24,000 miles, this program might just lead to a slight increase in quality surveys, if the vehicles are cared for better.
Cadillac owners already benefit from Cadillac Premium Care, which includes four years or 50,000 miles of oil changes, tire rotations, most air filter replacements, and an inspection. Lincoln recently cut back its complimentary maintenance program from four years/50,000 miles on 2013-model-year vehicles to two years/24,000 miles on 2014 models. An Automotive News report says Jaguar and Volvo have also recently scaled back their complimentary maintenance programs.
Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick are not the first non-first-tier luxury brands to offer complimentary maintenance — Volkswagen has offered three years or 36,000 miles of Carefree Maintenance on 2009-2013 model-year vehicles, and Toyota Care covers two years or 25,000 miles of service.
