2014 Fiat 500L Priced From $19,900

It's larger than the normal two-door 500, and it's more expensive, too: Fiat announced today that the 2014 500L four-door hatchback will start at $19,990, after an $800 destination charge. The Fiat 500L goes on sale in June at the company's "studios" (translation: dealers) nationwide.

That entry price affords buyers a 2014 Fiat 500L Pop, with standard features that include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, a five-inch touchscreen audio system, Bluetooth, and seven airbags. All versions of the 2014 Fiat 500L use a 160-hp, 1.4-liter turbo-four engine shared with the Fiat 500 Abarth. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional.

The next step up is the $20,995 Fiat 500L Easy, which adds on 16-inch aluminum wheels, tinted rear windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a six-speaker audio system with a 520-watt amplifier, and a choice of three vinyl-wrap colors for the dashboard. The Fiat 500L Trekking, starting at $21,995, is supposed to be the model for outdoorsy, rugged drivers. It comes with 17-inch wheels, unique fascias, contrast-color wheel arch moldings, black/brown interior trim, and bucket seats.

The most luxurious model is the $24,195 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge. It builds on the Easy trim level with a standard dual-clutch transmission, fog lights, chrome trim and mirror caps, heated powered leather front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a dimming rearview mirror with integrated compass.

For the first year of sales, Fiat will add the Premier Package for free to any 500L Easy, Trekking, or Lounge. The package includes a backup camera, parking sensors, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation. Buyers can also opt for the Premier Package +Beats/Sirius XM, which adds satellite radio, a Beats by Dre sound system with six speakers, and a trunk-mounted subwoofer.

The Fiat's closest competition in the U.S. is the Mini Countryman, and although the Mini offers more powerful engines and optional all-wheel drive, the Fiat 500L easily undercuts its entry prices. The 2013 Mini Countryman Cooper, which has a 121-hp, 1.6-liter inline-four engine and front-wheel drive, starts at $22,795 (including a $795 destination charge). Stepping up to the Countryman Cooper S, which adds a 181-hp 1.6-liter turbo-four engine, requires $26,395. A version of that model with Mini's "ALL4" all-wheel-drive system costs $28,095.

I have to disagree, the Fiat 500L's closest competitor in the US is the Kia Soul. The Kia Soul Plus comes with a 164 hp engine starting at $17,500 including destination charge, with a 6-speed manual or $18,500 with a 6-speed automatic.
