The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2014 Fiat 500L and 2014 Jeep Cherokee as 2013 Top Safety Picks yesterday.
In this latest round of testing the 2014 Fiat 500L scored “good” in all categories, the highest possible rating. Testing simulates a variety of crash situations, including whiplash as a result of a rear collision, front moderate-overlap impact, side impact, and roof-crush consistent with a rollover. The 500’s key safety features include reactive head restraints, safety cage body structure, and optional side guard door beams. Seven airbags come standard as well, including side-curtain, driver’s-side knee, and seat-mounted side airbags.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee, which comes with 10 standard airbags along with a 65-percent content ratio of advanced-technology steel, also earned top honors from the IIHS. The Cherokee scored "good" in all four crash-test categories. Over the last 10 months, 12 other Chrysler Group vehicles have also been awarded IIHS’s Top Safety Pick, including the 2013 Fiat 500, 2013 Chrysler 300 and 2013 Dodge Charger, 2013 Chrysler Town & Country and 2013 Dodge Caravan, 2013 Dodge Journey, 2014 Dodge Durango, 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014 Jeep Patriot. On top of that, the 2013 Dodge Dart, 2013 Dodge Avenger, and 2013 Chrysler 300 received the Top Safety Pick+ status, which recognizes superior performance in small-overlap front-crash tests. However, neither the Fiat nor the Jeep was awarded the Top Safety Pick+ designation because they were not yet subjected to the IIHS's rigorous small-offset test.
The safety commendations come at a critical time for Chrysler Group, which posted slow Fiat and Jeep sales in September. With the 2014 Jeep Cherokee finally arriving in showrooms, and the 2014 Fiat 500L still trying to attract new customers, the two models will no doubt benefit from the positive safety ratings.
