2014 Chevrolet Spark EV to Cost $27,495

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV will start at $27,495 before government incentives when it goes on sale this summer. Those eligible for a $7500 federal tax credit could pay just under $20,000, while state incentives could lower the price to as little as $17,495. In California, the Spark EV is eligible for the HOV lane without additional passengers.

Chevrolet is also offering a lease for the Spark EV, with a 1LT model requiring $999 down and $199 a month for 36 months. While Fiat offers a similar lease deal on the 500e, those who purchase the Spark EV may note the Chevrolet's base price undercuts the electric Italian hatchback by $5005. The most popular electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, currently offers a lease on a base model for $199 a month for 36 months and $1999 down. Near our El Segundo offices, Ford is offering a $259 a month lease for 36 months, with $1928 down on the Focus Electric. The Spark EV also undercuts the Mitsubishi i-MiEV ES and Nissan Leaf S by $2480 and $2155, respectively, though the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive starts at $25,750.

Motivation for the Spark EV is provided by a 130-hp, 400 lb-ft electric motor with juice supplied by a 21 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The Spark EV is rated 119 mpge combined and has an estimated 82 mile range. While a 120-volt charge cord is standard, the Spark EV can be recharged in less than seven hours with a dedicated 240-volt charge. Chevrolet claims the Spark EV will be the first vehicle compatible with the SAE combo charger for DC Fast Charging. With the optional equipment, the battery pack can receive up to an 80 percent charge in about 20 minutes.

Also available is the Spark EV RemoteLink app that, with an active OnStar subscription, can display charge status and voltage, schedule charge timing, show battery level and total range; send emails or texts for various notifications, and remotely start the vehicle.

The Spark EV will go on sale in California and Oregon beginning mid-June, though no other U.S. markets have been announced.
