Consumer Reports has been less than kind to domestic automakers for quite some time, but the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is looking to change that. The latest test numbers from CR shows that the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala has shot up in the rankings, now becoming the top-rated sedan and the third-highest rating of any car CR has tested.
CR scores cars on a 100-point scale, and the 2014 Chevrolet Impala scores 95 points. The only two vehicles that score higher are the 2013 Tesla Model S and the 2013 BMW 135i coupe. Key strengths for the Impala in this test included a comfortable ride, strong acceleration, responsive handling, and a spacious and luxuriously-trimmed cabin. The next best scoring cars in the large sedan class are the Hyundai Genesis with 92, the Toyota Avalon with 85, and the Chrysler 300 V-6 and Nissan Maxima with 83. The previous-generation Impala scored a 63, the lowest score in its class.
What remains to be seen for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is its reliability, which cannot yet be measured due to the car’s recent redesign. Reliability is a factor for CR’s “Recommended” rating, which cannot be applied to the 2014 Impala until the publication’s annual auto survey reports the car’s reliability data from owners.
After driving the 2014 Chevrolet Impala for more than 7000 miles on our Impala Great Lakes Circle Tour, we were impressed with the car as well. While we’re not so sure of CR’s rating that puts the Impala on the same playing field as luxury cars like the Audi A6, we are glad to see this American sedan getting some positive attention.
