After introducing the 2014 Impala at last year's New York auto show, Chevrolet is now ramping up production of the all-new full-size sedan. Initially, only the V-6 engine was being produced, but a new report says that the automaker has now begun production of Impalas with the 2.5-liter I-4.
The smaller four-cylinder is rated for 196 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Buyers will be able to pick up an Impala with the 2.5 pretty easily – it's the car's base engine and is standard with the 2014 model's $27,535 base price (including destination). The four-cylinder Impala will also be joined by the 3.6-liter V-6 version on General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck production line in Michigan; the factory also builds the Chevrolet Volt, Opel/Vauxhall Ampera, and Chevrolet Malibu. The V-6 Impala is also built at GM's facility in Oshawa, Ontario.
Despite V-6-powered Impalas rolling into showrooms this month, those wanting the more frugal four-cylinder will have to wait until next month. Versus the 3.6-liter – which is estimated at 19/29 mpg city/highway – the 2.5-liter is estimated to rake in 21/31 mpg. For some buyers, the extra fuel economy will definitely offset the missing 109 hp and 78 lb-ft from the six-cylinder. Those who are looking to be extra-frugal will have to wait until later this year, however: Chevrolet will also add a mild-hybrid e-Assist model to the Impala range. That car will use a 2.4-liter I-4 mated to an electric motor and net an eco-friendly 25/35 mpg. All three powertrains use a six-speed automatic transmission.
Chevrolet is hoping to reshuffle the sales distribution of the Impala with the all-new 2014 model. According to the Detroit Free Press, the 2013 Impala (which will continue on as the fleet-only Impala Limited) sold roughly 70 percent to fleets and just 30 percent to retail customers. Chevy's goal with the stylish and well-equipped new Impala is to flip those percentages.
