The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is finally on its way to dealerships and paying customers, General Motors announced today. The car was introduced publicly in January on the eve of the 2013 Detroit auto show and as of writing, GM has built about 1000 copies of the car.

Like all Corvettes since June 1981, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is built at GM's factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky. To prepare the facility for building the new seventh-generation Corvette, GM invested $131 million, including $52 million to upgrade the body shop to build the car's aluminum frame. Production of the last-generation car, the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette, stopped on February 28.

"It's an amazing sight to see the transporters filled with Stingrays heading to customers in all corners of the country," Bowling Green plant manager Dave Tatman said in a statement. "The pride at Bowling Green is overwhelming."

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray packs a 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 engine that is rated at 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, or 460 hp and 465 lb-ft if buyers opt for the high-performance Z51 package. When our colleagues at Motor Trend recently strapped a Stingray to the dyno rollers, they found it produced 402 hp at the rear wheels, more than backing up GM's official claims.

Despite all that power, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray posted impressive numbers in EPA testing -- at least for coupes with the seven-speed manual transmission, as models with the six-speed automatic have yet to be tested. The car is officially rated at 17/29 mpg (city/highway), a figure bolstered in part by the Active Fuel Management feature that can run the engine as a four-cylinder to save fuel when cruising.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe starts at $51,995, including destination charges, while the convertible version that bowed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show costs $56,995. Buyers awaiting a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray can expect to receive their car in the next two to three weeks -- assuming theirs was one of the first 1000 units built.
