Cadillac’s first ever plug-in hybrid, the 2014 Cadillac ELR, will carry a price of $75,995 including destination when it arrives in showrooms this January. The ELR, which shares its platform and plug-in powertrain with the Chevrolet Volt, debuted in production form at the 2013 Detroit auto show.
This price may sound steep for what appears to be a gussied-up Chevrolet Volt on the surface, but the 2014 Cadillac ELR does offer added power, luxurious amenities, and styling panache the $34,995 Volt only dreams of. The 2014 Cadillac ELR features the same basic powertrain as the Volt—a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that can serve as a generator for a 16.5 kilowatt hour battery pack and electric motor—but offers slightly more power, with 207 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque compared with the Volt’s 149 hp and 273 lb-ft. The 2014 ELR is nearly 300 pounds heavier than the Volt, though, which should make for similar straight-line performance. The 2014 Cadillac ELR will also offer much more standard luxury equipment than the Volt, including Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, navigation, leather seats, real wood trim, and numerous active safety features like lane departure warning and forward collision alert.
Cadillac has not yet announced specific option pricing for the 2014 ELR, but we do know that the ELR will offer a Luxury Package, which includes 20-inch aluminum wheels, intelligent headlights, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, and an adaptive cruise control system. The 2014 Cadillac ELR will also only come in four colors: Radiant Silver Metallic, Black Raven, Crystal Red Tintcoat, and Graphite Metallic.
We don’t yet know the official EPA estimates for the 2014 Cadillac ELR in either electric or hybrid modes, but the Chevrolet Volt is estimated at 38 miles of electric range, with gasoline fuel economy of 37 mpg combined. Expect the Cadillac ELR to fall slightly below these numbers due to ELR’s approximately 300-lb weight increase over a 2014 Chevrolet Volt.
