2014 BMW M235i Spied at Nurburgring

The last time our spy photographer shot the forthcoming BMW M235i, it was standing still at a gas station in Germany. This time, however, we have some action shots of it being put through its paces on – what else? – the Nurburgring.

Although BMW’s traditional swirled camouflage wrap does a decent job of obscuring details on this new 2 Series coupe, we’re fairly certain it’s none other than the hot, M-tweaked M235i. Look carefully beneath the front fascia’s wrap job, and you’ll see the bumper closely resembles that of the European M135i. The split five-spoke wheels are also shared with the M135i. Although it’s partially obscured by a faux bumper beam that runs the width of the rear fascia, this rear bumper boasts both sharp corner edges and dual exhaust outlets – two cues also found on the M135i.

Assuming this is the M235i, expect it to bear an even closer resemblance to the M135i beneath the skin. BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6, which throws down 320 hp, which is sent to either the rear wheels or all four wheels by way of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Early reports from those who’ve been lucky enough to sample the European-market car report the M135i can launch from 0-60 mph in as little as 4.9 seconds.

Although we’ve bemoaned the fact the hot M135i won’t make it to American roads, we’re thankful the M235i will. Better yet, it’ll make it to our shores fairly shortly. Leaked BMW USA documents confirm the M235i production begins in November, and will be sold here in rear-wheel drive guise only.

Yes, if they don't ask fitty grand for the thing via slapping on an M badge and graduating it to 2 series moniker, and btw we already have a "lithe, compact rear-drive coupe from BMW with 320 hp on tap"- the 135is.  As long as they build on that dynamically rather than just making the rear seat more accommodating and the engine more efficient with electronic steering and ASS, I'd be interested.  The shoulder line looks too soft ala Volvo C70, I hope that's the camo because its decidedly less aggressive looking than the current E82.
