Just how much is that 2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sport Wagon in the window? According to the "Build Your Own" section on BMW USA's consumer Web site, the answer is a healthy $42,345, including $895 in destination fees.

For the record, adding an elongated roof, an extra pair of pillars, and an enlarged (17.5 cubic feet) cargo compartment adds an extra $2600 over a comparably-equipped 2013 328i xDrive sedan. Like its sedan sibling, the 2014 328i xDrive Sport Wagon boasts a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4, a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. For the time being, the 3 Series Sport Wagon is only available in 328i xDrive form; a diesel-powered 328d xDrive Sport Wagon will join the lineup later this year, but pricing has yet to be announced.

Like every other 2013 3 Series sedan, the new 2013 328i xDrive Sport Wagon is offered with BMW's Design Line packages, which blend content with unique styling cues. The Luxury line, for instance, adds chrome kidney grille bars and a matching exhaust tip, along with chromed side window trim and roof rails. 18-inch multi-spoke aluminum wheels are part of the package, as is a black and chrome key fob, and your choice of saddle brown, Venetian beige, or black leather seating surfaces.

The Modern Line package is similar, but uses matte chrome on the grille bars and exhaust tip, and paints both the wide window trims and roof rails in black. 18-inch, turbine-inspired wheels are standard. Oyster and black leather seats are accented with dark oyster highlights, while the key fob receives a matching oyster accent.

Both the Modern and Luxury Line packages run $2300, and incorporate the $2200 Premium Package – which adds satellite radio, keyless entry and ignition, and leather seating.

For $2600, buyers can order their 2014 328i xDrive Sport Wagon with the Sport Package, which retains the Modern Line's blacked-out roof rails and window trim, and bundles it with matching kidney grille bars. A lowered sport suspension is standard, as are spiffy 18-inch five-spoke wheels. Leather seating is standard, although you have your choice of black-on-red, red-on-black, or black-on-grey two-tone schemes.

For an even sportier look, step up to the M Sport Line package, which runs $3950, but does not include the aforementioned Premium Package. Along with the ability to order M’s signature Estoril Blue exterior paint (for an extra $550), the M Sport Line group adds swoopier front and rear fascias, M-branded 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, a new steering wheel, and sport bucket seating.

The remainder of the 2014 328i xDrive Sport Wagon’s content and pricing structure is virtually identical to the 328i xDrive sedan. A cold-weather package – with heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel – runs $950, while a driver assistance package – which includes blind-spot detection, park sensors, and side/top/rear-view cameras – adds $1900 to the price tag. Driving enthusiasts may prefer to spring for the $1000 dynamic handling package, which adds adaptive dampers and variable sport-tuned steering assist. Navigation is either available a la carte for $2000, or as part of a $3000 technology package, which also includes a head-up display, enhanced gauge cluster, and telematics services.

It is beyond idiotic that BMW isn't offering the Touring here with a RWD option.  Why would anyone buy an X1 with RWD (which I can have, but don't want), or a 3-series GT in any flavor (like with the 6-cylinder turbo, which I would happily take in wagon form) when the Touring offers better handling, lower weight and more room (64.9 cubic feet vs. 56 for the X1)?  And unless you live deep in the snow belt, why saddle your daily ride with the weight, complexity and loss of steering feel that come with driving the front wheels, too? I know many Americans seem allergic to mom-mobile-itis, but c'mon, BMW -- cut practicality-minded drivers a break here.
