The newest version of the Lexus ES may have a long list of improvements and upgrades, but it's still cheaper than the 2012 model. Lexus revealed today that the 2013 ES350 will start at $36,995 (after an $895 destination charge), while the ES300h will start at $39,745.
The 2013 Lexus ES350 is $625 cheaper than the outgoing 2012 ES350, despite the fact that the new car has a host of improvements. Updates to the 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission have improved fuel economy to 21/31 mpg (city/highway). The 2012 Lexus ES350 returned 19/28 mpg in EPA testing.
The 2013 Lexus ES made its debut at the New York auto show in April. Standard equipment includes ten airbags and, an eight-speed sound system with iPod and satellite radio connectivity. New options on the 2013 Lexus ES include a blind-spot warning system, Lane Departure Alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Whereas the old Lexus ES shared its platform with the Toyota Camry, the new model is based on the 2013 Toyota Avalon.
The 2013 ES300h is the first Lexus ES model ever offered with a hybrid powertrain. In this case, the 2.5-liter inline-four engine and pair of electric motor/generators are lifted directly from the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The ES300h starts at $39,745, which represents a relatively minor premium of $2750 over the non-hybrid ES350.The Lexus hybrid is rated for 40/39 mpg, down three highway miles compared to the 2012 Camry Hybrid's rating of 43/39 mpg.
The 2013 Lexus ES350 and 2013 Lexus ES300h will reach showrooms in August.
