2013 Jaguar XJ, XF Receive Supercharged 3.0L V-6, XF Gets Turbo-Four

#Jaguar, #XF

Big news for Jaguar lovers: the XJ and XF are receiving new powertrain options for 2013. Both models will receive an all-new supercharged V-6, while the 2013 XF will also add a turbocharged I-4 to its option list.

We've already heard a fair bit about the new six-cylinder, as it's the same engine that will be found under the hood of the upcoming 2014 F-Type sports car. The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 will produce the same 340 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque in both the XJ and the XF, which is a bit less than the 380 hp the F-Type is expected to offer from the same engine. For U.S. buyers, the V-6 will complement the naturally aspirated and supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 offerings that range from 385 to 510 hp in power. All XJ and XF models also gain an eight-speed automatic transmission – complete with an engine stop/start function -- in place of the old six-speed. Jaguar says this new gearbox is 14-percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing transmission.

It looks like the XF will further mirror the powertrain lineup of the new F-Type. On top of sharing the 5.0-liter V-8 and 3.0-liter V-6, it will also be offered with the F-Type’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4. For the record, it’s also the same engine found in the Range Rover Evoque; the 2013 Ford Explorer, Edge, Escape, Taurus, and Fusion. In the XF, the turbo-four will be good for 240 hp and 250 lb-ft.

Sadly, the long-in-the-tooth XK coupe and convertible will soldier on with its existing V-8 powertrains and six-speed automatic. That model range is now six years old and due to be overhauled within the near future.

Jaguar also has some other updates specific to U.S.-market models in store for the 2013 model year, but a company representative wouldn't divulge them to us at this point in time. Expect to hear more on that and pricing for the 2013 models in August; the 2013 XF and XJ will go on sale this fall.
