2013 Ford Escape Recalled for Faulty Carpet Padding, Could Affect Braking

Ford is issuing a recall of 8266 2013 Ford Escape crossovers for improperly-installed carpet padding around the center console. The incorrectly-installed padding could cause drivers to hit the side of the brake pedal with their foot when transferring their foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal, increasing braking distances and the risk of a crash. The 2013 Ford Escape is an all-new design that will be shared with the European Kuga crossover. The 2013 model's appearance in showrooms over the past few months has helped it out-sell the Honda CR-V, which has dominated segment sales for most of 2012.

The Problem: Mis-positioned carpet padding could be pushed outboard of its proper position, forcing the driver's foot to contact the side of the brake pedal when transferring from the throttle pedal to the brake. The compromised function of the pedal controls could potentially increase stopping distances and the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Ford will contact affected owners and remove and replace the faulty carpet padding and left-side console trim panel. Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332, recall campaign # 12S34, or call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at: 888-327-4236.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 8266 2013 Ford Escape models built from March 8, 2012 to June 7, 2012
