2013 Chevrolet SS NASCAR Racer Revealed, Previews 2014 Production Sedan

Chevrolet pulled the wraps off its new SS NASCAR racer today, which will campaign in the 2013 Sprint Cup series. The most important part of this debut, however, is that the styling of the new NASCAR machine closely previews the design of the 2014 Chevrolet SS production car.

Thanks to looser rules that allow the NASCAR cars to look more like the production vehicles on which they are based, the Chevrolet SS race car gives us a strong indication of the real sedan's appearance. The nose wears a relatively small rounded-rectangle upper grille with big Chevrolet bowtie emblem, with a much larger black mesh grille opening below, which is in line with Chevy's new range-wide look from the Malibu, Impala, and Traverse. The wide headlights look somewhat like those seen on the new Malibu and Impala, while the lower-corner foglight surrounds are black plastic with a strip of LED running lights, and the hood bears a few mild strakes.

Out back is a simple trunklid adorned with taillights that stack red lenses atop clear ones. The protruding bumper features a giant "SS" logo where a real car's license plate would be, as well as a pair of fake circular chrome exhaust tips. There are vents behind the front wheels, from which radiate two character creases that are angled up toward the car's beltline.

The production Chevrolet SS should look very similar to this race car, albeit with four doors, the addition of mirrors and windshield wipers, and the deletion of things like the roll cage and giant rear spoiler. When we spied a Chevrolet SS testing earlier this year, it bore the same basic grille layout and rear bumper design as see on this car, along with a pair of circular exhaust tips out back.

Chevrolet announced in May that it would build the SS based on a rear-wheel-drive platform used by General Motors' Australian division Holden. Expect V-8 power with sporty suspension and brake enhancements. The Chevrolet SS is scheduled to go on sale in limited numbers by late 2013 as a 2014 model.
