2013 Cadillac ATS Priced at $33,990, $1805 Less than BMW 328i

With its 2013 ATS, Cadillac is aiming to knock the BMW 3 Series off its compact luxury sports sedan throne. Certainly, a range of three engines, rear- and all-wheel drive, and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will help in that quest, but he ATS has another arrow in its quiver: a $33,990 base price with destination that is $1805 less than the 2012 BMW 328i.

That $33,990 price will get buyers the base 202-hp 2.5-liter I-4 engine, a six-speed automatic, and rear-wheel drive. Cadillac's CUE infotainment system will also be standard on all ATS sedans. Aimed at enthusiasts, the mid-level 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 pricing will start at $35,795 with destination for rear-wheel drive with either a six-speed automatic transmission or an optional six-speed manual; all-wheel drive will be optional, but only available with the automatic. The 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 272 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Topping the ATS range will be the direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6, which is good for 321 hp and 274 lb-ft. Rear-wheel drive is standard with the $42,090 base price, all-wheel drive will be optional; however, only the six-speed auto can be paired with the V-6.

The 2013 ATS presents a fairly good bargain compared to the price of entry of other compact luxury sport sedans. Only the Audi A4, Infiniti G25, and Volvo S60 T5 have lower base prices of $33,795, $33,495, and $32,175 with destination, respectively. The base 2.5-liter in the Cadillac ATS trails all but the 201-hp Mercedes-Benz C250 in terms of power; however, the optional 3.6-liter V-6, with its 321 hp, bests all but the 325-hp Volvo S60 R-Design, 328-hp Infiniti G37 and the 333-hp Audi S4. The ATS' V-6 also comes in mid-pack among the six-cylinder offerings – it’s less expensive than the S4, the BMW 335i, and the S60 R-Design, but pricier than the Infiniti G37, the Lexus IS 350, and the Mercedes C350. Only Volvo and Mercedes also offer a second, mid-tier engine option, both of which are six-cylinders. Despite being down two cylinders from the competition, the ATS 2.0T stacks up well: it bests the Mercedes C300 4Matic by 44 hp (although it is down 28 hp from the Volvo S60 T6 AWD) and undercuts both of their prices by $3000 to $4000.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS will go on sale this summer, and it will be interesting to see how the compact luxury sport sedan heats up given its aggressive pricing figures – for the full horsepower and pricing breakdown, see our charts below. What do you think? Will more buyers begin to snatch up the ATS over the 3 Series and C-Class thanks to its lower price? Let us know in the comments section.

This looks like a nice car, but I'm astounded that the TSX is not listed as a competitor. More features, similar base engine, and $3,000 less. I understand It's no BMW, but if you list Volvo as a competitor/sporty sedan then Acura certainly comes into play.

The 328 will crap on the ATS. My guess. Especially if the price is similar
