2013 Cadillac ATS By The Numbers: The Lightest Competitor By Far

Cadillac engineers brag that they built the 2013 ATS from the ground up to be the lightest competitor in the sport luxury sedan class. The ATS might not excel over its competitors in every other metric, but it is the lightest luxury sport sedan on the market today. Mission accomplished.

With the 2013 ATS arriving at Cadillac dealers now, it wades into battle against a serious group of challengers, including the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4/S4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Volvo S60, Infiniti G Sedan, Acura TSX, Lexus IS, and Lincoln MKZ, as well as GM's own Buick Regal, a similarly-sized sport luxury sedan.

Not only is the ATS considerably smaller than the CTS it replaces as Cadillac's entry-level sedan, it's smaller than most of itscompetiton. Its 109.3-inch wheelbase and 182.8-inch length put it about mid-pack in terms of exterior size, but on the inside it's a different story. The ATS has 10.2 cubic feet of trunk space, firmly at the bottom of the market, and with 90.9 cubic feet of passenger volume it's 6.3 cubic feet less roomy in the cabin than the BMW 3 Series. But that does translate to a lower curb weight than its competitors too: the ATS is 3315 pounds with the base 2.5-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission, about 90 pounds less than the BMW 3 Series with the 2.0-liter turbo and six-speed manual transmission.

In fact, the ATS scored near the middle of the pack in many other metrics. Rear seat passengers have 33.5 inches of legroom, better than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (33.4 in) and Lexus IS (30.6 in), but behind larger cars like the Buick Regal (37.3 in) and Lincoln MKZ (37 in).

In base-model guise, the ATS comes with 202 hp from a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four cylinder engine, which puts it towards the bottom of the pack for base horsepower, but it ranks third in available horsepower thanks to its top-spec 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 321 hp. It remains to be seen how the ATS' fuel economy will compete, but the base model has been rated at 22 city, 33 highway, towards the top of competitors for base model fuel economy.

In the end, the ATS lands near the middle of a very competitive, fairly impressive category of car. For engineers looking to make a competitive car and an interesting addition to the segment, it looks like they may have hit that goal.

But metrics don’t tell the whole story – click here to read our First Drive review of the 2013 Cadillac ATS and see exactly how these numbers translate into an on-road experience.

The ATS' base engine should be an E-assist. That way, each engine will have something special about it. Even so, I like where Cadillac is going.

You forgot the Volvo S60 also has a third engine level available. The R-Design with 325 hp and 354 lb/ft of torque.
