The 2012 Maserati Trofeo MC World Series is expanding into the U.S., where the new and improved 2012 GranTurismo racer will make its debut at Infineon Raceway.
Maserati Corse prepared the new racer to be lighter and more aerodynamically efficient, which helped the car finish 2.5-seconds faster than its predecessor around the Vallelunga circuit during winter testing. Although the racer's setup is different, it will look exactly the same as the 2011 car, except the 2012 car will wear the decals of sponsor Bowers & Wilkins. Maserati expects 25 racing teams from 12 countries to compete this year.
The revised Maserati enters a slightly redone race series. This year, the standard 40-minute event will run for three rounds, and a new Absolute classification will allow all drivers to compete for a place in the standings. Three additional rounds for endurance racing will include two 30-minute races and one 50-minute race. The series has also added rounds to the Shanghai International Circuit in China but, before that happens, the 2012 GranTurismo racer will make race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California in September.
